They might come on the same machine, but your fridge and freezer have components that operate independently. If you’re in a place where the fridge isn’t working but freezer is, there are a few fixes that you can look at.
Most of these fixes will deal with air circulation, which is critical to maintain a cool temperature throughout the fridge. If you’re having problems with any of these issues, you might need new fans or cooling elements. We have a short online form so that you can schedule an appointment and get back to safe food!
Fridge Isn’t Working But Freezer Is: Possible Fixes
If both your fridge and freezer aren’t working, then you know that there is something wrong with the power or the main components. But if something is wrong with the fan, airflow, or defroster, it might have you saying: “fridge isn’t working but freezer is.”
1. Bad evaporator fan
The evaporator fan is in the freezer section of the fridge, but helps to circulate all that cold air throughout the entire device. There’s a compressor which activates refrigerant vapor which takes heat out of the fridge.
To circulate properly, the fan needs to be working to cool things down. If the fan goes out, the freezer might still be cold from refrigerant but it won’t circulate in the larger fridge. This might be one of the main reasons you experience the dreaded “fridge isn’t working but freezer is.”
2. Something blocking air flow
There are generally condenser coils at the bottom of your fridge and a fan at the top. The circulation of air in the fridge is critical to maintaining a nice temperature throughout. Obviously if you cool the top down nicely but get no circulation, some foods will remain warm after you put them in because they retain their heat instead of having it sucked away.
If the coils are under or behind the fridge, you can vacuum them or clean them off. Any dust or blockage can cause them to not function properly. On the interior of the fridge, make sure that the vents and fans are free from any food or frost. If you overpack your fridge, you can block airflow from fans and coils and prevent it from cooling properly.
Over time, frost can build up on the coils and fans which needs to be cleaned off so that things continue to function.
3. Bad defrost system
Because the fridge requires certain elements to get ice-cold to function properly, the fridge also needs to melt that ice. Yes, did you know your fridge might have a version of a heater in it? It has a defrost element which heats the cooling element for a short time to prevent frost from building up.
When your fridge doesn’t get cold enough, it causes more than just half-melted butter and moisture on your bags. It can actually pose some health hazards as well. It’s important to make sure that your fridge is operating at optimal temperatures to make sure that food stays safe and lasts a long time!
