Fridge Not Cold But Freezer Is: Possible Fixes
If both your fridge and freezer aren’t working, then you know that there is something wrong with the power or the main components. But if something is wrong with the fan, airflow, or defroster, it might have you saying: “fridge not cold but freezer is”.
1. Bad evaporator fan
Do you have a warm fridge and cold freezer? The evaporator fan is in the freezer section of the fridge, but helps to circulate all that cold air throughout the entire device. There’s a compressor that activates refrigerant vapor which takes heat out of the fridge.
To circulate properly, the fan needs to be working to cool things down. If the fan goes out, the freezer might still be cold from refrigerant but it won’t circulate in the larger fridge. This might be one of the main reasons you experience the dreaded “fridge not cold but freezer is.”
2. Something blocking air flow
Freezer working but not fridge? There are generally condenser coils at the bottom of your fridge and a fan at the top. The circulation of air in the fridge is critical to maintaining a nice temperature throughout. Obviously, if you cool the top-down nicely but get no circulation, some foods will remain warm after you put them in because they retain their heat instead of having it sucked away.
If the coils are under or behind the fridge, you can vacuum them or clean them off. Any dust or blockage can cause them to not function properly, including causing a fridge not cold but freezer is. On the interior of the fridge, make sure that the vents and fans are free from any food or frost. If you overpack your fridge, you can block airflow from fans and coils and prevent it from cooling properly.
Over time, frost can build up on the coils and fans which need to be cleaned off so that things continue to function.
3. Bad defrost system
Are you wondering how to fix a refrigerator not cooling? Because the fridge requires certain elements to get ice-cold to function properly, the fridge also needs to melt that ice. Yes, did you know your fridge might have a version of a heater in it? It has a defrost element that heats the cooling element for a short time to prevent frost from building up.
When your fridge not working but freezer is, it causes more than just half-melted butter and moisture on your bags. It can actually pose some health hazards as well. It’s important to make sure that your fridge is operating at optimal temperatures to make sure that food stays safe and lasts a long time!
