A Guide to Dryer Duct Cleaning

dryer duct cleaning

Your dryer duct is connected to the aluminum tube in the back that collects all the condensation, lint, and dirt from your wet clothing. Dryer duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning is essential to maintaining home safety and a well-functioning dryer.

Do You Need Dryer Duct Cleaning?

Are you wondering if you need dryer duct cleaning? If materials build up in the duct, it can start a fire or prevent clothing from cleaning properly. Up to 2,900 home fires start from dryers every year, and failure to clean your dryer duct is the leading cause!

If you need professional cleaning for your dryer duct, schedule our services right away. Wondering when to clean your dryer vent?

1. Dryer isn’t Drying Very Well

If your clothes aren’t drying very well, there are a couple of potential problems: bad spin cycles on the washing machine and bad dryer ducts. If your washing machine won’t spin, then your clothes will be soaking wet in the dryer. Fix a washing machine that won’t spin before blaming the dryer! Clogged dryer ducts affect your machine’s ability to dry, and cleaning them out can give you fresher, cleaning clothing.

2. Burning Smells

Ever smelled your dryer and it smells like burning fabric and smouldering hair? That smell is the combination of a clogged dryer duct and a lot of heat. In fact, dryer duct fires are a real danger—having your duct cleaned often prevents that risk.

3. It Hasn’t Been Cleaned in a While

Even if your dryer seems totally fine, you should clean your dryer duct every couple of months. If you wait too long, you might need dryer duct services. Lint left in the dryer too long builds up and it becomes harder to clean in the future.

How to Tackle Dryer Duct Cleaning

Wondering how to clean dryer vent, or how to clean your dryer duct? Dryer duct cleaning can only be handled with special tools. Vacuum cleaners might pull some of the built-up lint out of the duct, but it won’t scrub down the sides. You can use a vacuum cleaner to clean the inside of a dryer, but a brush is needed for the duct. For DIY dryer duct cleaning:

  1. Unplug the dryer.
  2. Remove the aluminum tubing. Have a vacuum cleaner handy because a lot of lint will probably spill out.
  3. Run a brush through the duct, being sure to hit all the sides. Spin the brush to dislodge material.
  4. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean up any loose lint.
  5. Reattach the tubing and plug the dryer back in.

If you don’t have a dryer duct brush, you won’t be able to get your duct very clean. Alternative brushes and vacuum cleaners don’t work well for the shape and texture of the ducts. Good dryer brushes are extendible and have hard bristles that can knock lint out of the vent.

After brushing, make sure that you don’t damage the tubing when you reinstall. If you accidentally puncture the tubing or damage your house’s dryer vent, you’ll need more extensive repairs.

Reducing Lint Buildup

1. Clean the Lint Screen

Make sure to clean out the lint screen in your dryer frequently. Cleaning the lint screen is far easier than cleaning out the dryer duct. Clean lint screens reduce the amount of lint that builds up in the duct.

2. Reduce Strain on Your Dryer

Soggy clothing and towels are tough work for even the best dryer. By keeping loads smaller and spinning clothes multiple times, you can reduce the stress on your dryer. Limiting the stress on your dryer helps reduce the chances that your duct will get filled with lint.

If you smell burning, stop the dryer immediately and call the pros. There’s no need to risk a fire hazard!
